Fiona today presented a petition to Parliament on governance in Kashmir. Fiona said, “I have here a petition signed by over 2000 of my constituents calling for a debate on the Kashmir situation in the House of Commons. The organisers wrote to me to say they believe this is a threat to regional and global peace and is causing insecurity, instability and human rights violations. The UK, being a friend of India and Pakistan should facilitate a negotiated settlement as per international commitments and UN resolutions”
Fiona said, “I have long called for protection of human rights in Kashmir, it is unacceptable that people’s rights are abused every day. This is unfinished colonial business and Britain should help to resolve the situation.”
The petition was originally handed to Fiona by Kashmir Concern, a local campaign group.
