Commenting on the Khat ban which is comes into force today, Fiona Mactaggart said, “I’ve been campaigning for a long time to ban khat. Constituents have approached me, letting me know that it destroys families, with men leaving work to use the drug daily. I’m glad that the Government has taken this step, it can start to help restore families that have been broken apart by use of Khat.”
In 2012, Fiona gave evidence to the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs’ Working Group. Khat has already been banned in most other European countries and the USA, and people were worried that the UK had become an international hub for the trade of the drug.
Khat is mainly used by men in the British Somali, Yemeni and Ethiopian communities.
