In celebration of National Libraries Day (Saturday 7 February 2015) Fiona Mactaggart, MP for Slough donated a collection of Quick Reads books to the Britwell Library, for library users to keep. Fiona had on 4th February hosted a reception in Parliament celebrating the Quick Reads programme, sponsored by Galaxy the luxury chocolate made by Slough company Mars. Quick Reads is an initiative to encourage people to read by publishing short and interesting books.
The event was attended by authors who have written books for Quick Reads including Andy McNab, Roddy Doyle and Sophie Hannah. TV Cooks, the Hairy Bikers were also at the event.
Fiona said, “The Quick Reads programme is a great idea. Reading is such an important skill. I want people to read for pleasure, that is what Quick Reads and National Libraries Day aims to help with.
“In Slough, we’re lucky enough to have four main libraries. They’re not just places to get books but you can also borrow magazines and DVDs, study, use computers and attend events that are happening there. They’re community hubs and we should all visit them more often! I hope that people will enjoy the books that I’m donating. There are not enough gripping books for adults who have not got much experience of reading. These books are just that and I was glad to host a reception to thank the authors who have written such great books.”
